The aluminum frame, which comes in a nice dark blue paintjob, is adorned with a slew of functionally oriented parts. The urban bicycle commuter will appreciate the upright riding position, smooth- and fast-rolling 700c wheels, included hub-generator head- and taillights, and built-in rear rack and integrated rear wheel lock. Fenders with mud flaps and a clear, hard-plastic chainguard help keep riders clean and dry. Comfort is afforded by suspension on the seatpost and the front fork--just enough to take the shock out of your ride. Specialized's Infinity tires grant a good balance between low rolling resistance and solid traction. They also feature puncture protection, and reflective sidewalls that are excellent for increasing nighttime visibility. Other manufacturers offering similar bicycles include Breezer and Trek. Specialized's commuter, with its 24-speed drivetrain, features a much broader gearing range than the bicycles offered by its competitors; the downside is that a derailleur requires more maintenance and is more susceptible to the elements than the internally geared hubs found on the Trek and Breezer bicycles; the upside would be that it's a lot easier to pedal the Globe up a steep hill. |

Wired magazine reported that last month’s Interbicycle 2007 in Las Vegas was dripping in new offerings for the burgeoning ‘City bicycle’ category. “Fancy road and mountain bicycles are clearly no longer king of the roost -- or road. It's the scads of fixed-gear, town, single-speed and other urban bicycles that are drawing the crowds.” Observing that clothing manufacturers have more messenger bags on show and their jerseys and shorts are more urban with less multi-colored lycra. [Hooray!] Wired notes that Specialized have 34 urban bicycles in their catalog for 2008 (like the Centrum above), while quoting Monica Howe, of the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition as saying "What's really happened in the past year is a cultural shift." However there is a bit of a subnote to this piece, which also makes mention of Swobo and Bicycle Kitchen, to found in the comments section. Something we find here at TH. Readers are scratching the head saying, and we paraphrase, “$700 USD for a bicycle I can ride round around town? Without gears? Whoa Bro.” Others are asking, “Huh, isn’t this what bicycles used to be like, before everyone had to have a mountain bicycle?” Or “Can’t I pick up a second hand bicycle from $30 to $200 that will do all this?” So yeh, it might be a cultural shift for one generation, and a return to roots for another. But let’s not worry about it. Rather rejoice. The bottom line is interest in biking is growing, not just for recreation, but also for commuting and general transport. |
